3 Raptors

This is a very agile bird. It weaves between trees chasing it's prey of birds and mammals. The northern goshawk lives in forests, usually not close to populated areas. It has a wide range, you can see that mapped here. It is 53 cm long with a wingspan of 1.1 m, weighing 0.9 to 1.4 kg. They live up to 20 years. The latin name is accipiter gentilis.


The American kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America. It preys on snakes, lizards, small birds, mice, crickets and grasshoppers. It is 23 cm long with a wingspan of 56 cm, weighing 100 to 125 g. They live up to 15 years.

The latin name is falco sparverius.


The female is larger than the male. Males will mate with more than one female at a time in years when prey is plentiful. It eats insects, birds and small mammals. They are nocturnal. You can find it's range map here. They are 21 to 28 cm long with a wingspan of 54 to 62 cm, weighing 90 - 225 g. They live up to 11 years.

The latin name is aegolius funereus.
