On December 19th, we participated in the Ladner Christmas Bird Count. We went to Brunswick Point, which is kind of funny, because the day before we made it to New Brunswick. We saw 59 different bird species. It was our biggest single day so far. We had 9 lifers.* New birds for us included rough-legged hawk, rink-necked pheasant, dunlin, black-bellied plover, American pipit, Western meadowlark, Lincoln's sparrow, Western sandpiper, and mute swan. To see all of this we walked 8 km with Yousif from Birds Canada. He helped us identify birds.
I was most excited to see the rough-legged hawk, because it does a hover-hunt. We also got to see it hover-hunt. We also saw an bald eagle with an American wigeon in it's talons.
*A lifer is a bird species that you have not seen before.
This photo is of a peregrine falcon from December 19th.
We are 6040 km from Tofino!
