Today we are learning about Manitoba's provincial emblems. The provincial bird is the Great Grey Owl, and the provincial mammal is the North American Plains Bison. The provincial flower is a prairie crocus.
The Great Grey Owl is North America's largest owl. It's wingspan is 1.4m. It's length is 61cm to 48cm. It weighs between 0.7 kg and 1.7 kg. It can live up to 14 years. Great Grey Owls eat rodents and other small mammals. The Great Grey Owl will use other bird's nests, but is also happy to use hollow snags. It lives year-round in most of Manitoba. The Great Grey Owl's status is secure.
The North American Plains Bison is the largest land mammal in North America. It's scientific name is bison bison bison. It's status is threatened. Lack of habitat is it's biggest threat.
We are at 2519 km from Tofino.
We don't have a picture of a Great Grey Owl, but Manitoba also has Mourning Doves, and we do have a picture of a Mourning Dove that is up on our wall, so here it is.
