Today we passed Rainbow Falls Provincial Park. I am going to tell you about one bird that has been seen at the park, the Sandhill Crane.
Sandhill Cranes are 0.8 to 1.2 m in length, their wingspan is 1.8 to 2.3 m, they weigh 3.5 to 5 kg. They can live for up to 25 years. They have an iron-stained plumage. That means that some of them have a rusty coloured body and light grey legs. The normal plumage has a greyish body and black legs. In the photo we think we have iron-stained plumage Sandhill Cranes, because they have a rusty coloured body. Sandhill Cranes eat aquatic molluscs and insects, grains and shoots. They only have one egg, once per year. They nest from April to September.
They winter in the south and will go as far south as northern Mexico. They nest in northwestern North America, the farthest east they will get is western Quebec and the Great Lakes.
These cranes were photographed in Maple Ridge, BC.
We are 3680 km from Tofino!
