A couple of days ago we passed Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary. It is particularly important for migrating waterfowl like the Canada goose, mallards, common mergansers and American black ducks.
The mallard is 50 to 65 cm long, has a wingspan of 82 to 95 cm and weighs 1 to 1.3 kg. They are dabbling ducks, which means they cannot dive. They just stick their bums up in the air to feed on aquatic plants. There is a subspecies of the mallard called the Mexican duck and the male Mexican duck looks like the female Northern mallard. They live for up to 29 years.
This is a northern mallard drake.

We are 5251 km from Tofino!
